3sixteen:

At 3sixteen we all share a love of good coffee. Through mutual acquaintances, we’ve built a friendship with Michael, Tyler and Chris at Handsome Coffee Roasters in Los Angeles over the past two years and it’s safe to say that we love how they’re raising the bar in the coffee industry with both their product and their service. We’ve also found that the guys at HCR respect well crafted, thoughtfully made goods that get better with time; thus, our seemingly disparate industries hold more commonalities than meets the eye. Through this mutual respect, we decided to work together to make something that would be useful to our daily lives: a travel coffee kit. 

While this kit may seem frivolous to some, the HCR guys are constantly on the road: traveling to train shops around the country that serve their beans, and visiting the farms that their single origin beans are grown on. We travel often as well: to Japan (where our denim is woven) to San Francisco (where our jeans are produced), and to tradeshows and retailers around the world. Having the ability to brew a good cup of coffee wherever we are is a simple luxury, but one that we are grateful for. We assembled a collection of portable equipment that we believe makes a great cup: an AWS digital scale, an Aeropress, a Porlex hand grinder, and a bag of freshly roasted HCR beans. The only thing you need to make your coffee is a cup and some hot water.

To carry the equipment, we employed our good friend Teppei Teranishi of Teranishi Handcrafted to make some leather satchels for us. Teppei hand cuts and sews leather goods in his studio on Vashon Island off the coast of Seattle. We chose Chromexcel leather from Chicago’s famed Horween tannery due to its beautiful pull-up nature and the hot-stuffing process that it goes through during tanning, which gives it natural water repellence. Each leather satchel was individually cut, sewn and riveted together by one man from start to finish. Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing photos of the production process here.
